The EMDR Toolbox: AIP Methods for Treating Complex PTSD & Dissociative Personality Structure with Jim Knipe, Ph.D.

EMDR has had a profound positive impact on the lives of many clients and has been shown to be effective with trauma victims in more than 24 randomised trails. The DSM definition of PTSD is focused on a single traumatic incident, while many clients have a damaging trauma history that extended over repeated events or over long periods of time. The term “Complex PTSD” has been proposed to describe a pattern of negative effects of prolonged and extreme stress, particularly during childhood. This workshop focuses on this population.

This workshop describes a theoretical framework, and specific therapy “tools” which may be useful in providing effective therapy, within the EMDR Adaptive Information Processing model, to individuals suffering with Complex PTSD. Important concepts and particular interventions will be illustrated through video examples and transcripts from therapy sessions. Dr Knipe will present methods for identifying and treating specific dissociative symptoms with accompanying evidence from available research or case studies.

Participants will learn how non-AIP models of dissociation, such as the Theory of Structural dissociation of the Personality (van de Hart, et al, 2007) and the Internal Family Systems model (Schwartz, 1995) may be complementary to the EMDR/AIP model, and some guidelines on how to blend these different approaches to benefit the individual client.

Specific interventions that are useful in the treatment of Complex Trauma and dissociative symptoms will be presented. Participants will learn how EMDR-related methods may be useful in assisting those clients through all stages of therapy – phases of stabilisation, emotionally safe trauma processing, and personality integration. Practical methods of AIP targeting of avoidance defences (including addictive disorders), idealisation, defences and shame-based depression will be taught.

Workshop requirements

Prior completion of EMDR Approved Parts 1-3 basic training to attend.

Intrigued – then do make a note in your diary, with plenty of notice, to join one of the world’s best EMDR clinicians for two days that will deepen and enrich your practice. To book a place, or for more information, click here or email Sonya Farrell – emdreastanglia@gmail.com

Workshop Objectives

On this London training, Jim will be teaching a whole toolbox of techniques and procedures participants will be able to recognise, identify, or describe:

  • An AIP theory of how dissociative personality structure and Complex PTSD originates.
  • 3 conceptually different types of damage to personality development that can occur from a difficult childhood.
  • 3 ways of targeting and resolving avoidance defences, and how these targeting methods are modified for clients with dissociative personality structure.
  • Elements of EMDR-related treatment of addictive disorders: preparation, target selection (urges and triggers, dysfunctional positive affect, unresolved conflict between dissociated personality parts), and treatment follow-up.
  • Ways of identifying and targeting idealisation defences.
  • The origins of dissociative personality structure in trauma and in early dysfunctional attachment to caretaker.
  • The “Loving Eyes” method.
  • The “Back-of-the-Head-Scale”, a means of assessing, moment to moment in the session, the degree to which a client is orientated to present safety.
  • The “Constant Installation of Present Orientation and Safety (CIPOS) method to safely facilitate processing and clients who are highly vulnerable to dissociative abreaction.
  • Approaches to use with combat veterans who are also exhibiting a dissociative personality structure.
  • The “problem of attachment to the perpetrator”, and how this issue, which often occurs in the clinical picture of a dissociative client, can be treated.

Participant praise for Jim’s 2014 Toolbox Workshop …

“The most original things I’ve heard since my first EMDR trainings.”

”Great presentation! Further added to what I got from Jim’s workshop two years ago. I am planning to use mind mapping to conceptualize cases in the way Jim does.”

“I have two clients that I plan to use CIPOS with this week. I think it is a solution to a problem I have been struggling with.”

About the presenter: Jim Knipe

Jim is a licenced psychologist in private practice in Colorado since 1976 and has used EMDR since 1992. He has written chapters for EMDR Casebook (P.Mansfield 2002); EMDR Solutions I and II (R.Shapiro, 2005, 2009); Healing the Heart of Trauma and Dissociation (C.Forgash & M.Copely, 2007); and EMDR Scripted Protocols: Special Populations (M. Luber,2009). Also, he has a chapter in Dissociation: the Progressive Approach (A. Gonzoles & D. Mosquera, 2012).

Jim Knipe PhD is an EMDR-HAP Trainer, an EMDRIA-approved Consultant and Instructor, and was designated a “Master Clinician” by EMDRIA in 2007.

Jim was a Keynote Speaker at the 2010 EMDRIA Annual Conference and has been an invited speaker at several international conferences – EMDRIA, EMDR Canada, EMDR Europe and Asia – the 2013 ISSTD Conference; and the 2014 European Society for Trauma and Dissociation Conference.

Dr. Jim Knipe is the author of the 2014 book: EMDR Toolbox: Theory and Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociation. His writings and workshops describe specific procedures that can be utilised to extend EMDR to clients who present with self-defeating psychological defences and/or dissociative symptoms. Jim’s exquisitely client-centred and imaginative approach, set out in this popular new book EMDR Toolbox, has revolutionised the practice of EMDR therapists around the world, with simple techniques such as CIPOS and the targeting of positive affect. (CIPOS for those who haven’t had the privilege and fun of experiencing Jim when he was last in the UK (2011) stands for Constant Installation of Present Orientation and Safety)

Jim is one of the international EMDR community’s most inspiring and innovative trainers and authors and we are thrilled that he will be presenting the course.
